Father's Day Chocolate Cake

Father's Day Chocolate Cake- Paint the Gown Red

Chocolate cake, buttercream shortbread pecan filling, chocolate frosting, topped with pecans. Now that’s what I call a chocolate cake. Amiright? I blame my dad for my chocolate obsession. He was the one that gave me my first bite of chocolate (it was ice cream, I was an infant and it was magical) and the one who’s been enabling my chocolate addiction ever since. He loves chocolate. I love chocolate. There’s never such thing as too much. In fact, chocolate on chocolate is our favorite. So on Father’s Day I like to bake him a chocolate cake. This, my friends, is that cake.

Father's Day Chocolate Cake- Paint the Gown Red

This year’s Father’s Day cake was inspired by this Millionaires cake, which sounds amazing, but wayyyy too time consuming. So I made a few adjustments. I bought Walker shortbread cookies and mashed them up. I used this super easy caramel sauce recipe, leftover buttercream from this recipe and this chocolate chocolate cake recipe. Then I added some nuts because my dad is nuts. Also he really enjoys them. Then I put it all together... by totally and completely winging it. Yep. Sometimes there is no method to the madness. And by golly if you can believe it… the cake was amazing! Not convinced? Go on and try it!

I got the cake topper idea from The Paper Mama. I think it’s so funny and adorable...and my dad loved it. Success! Here’s a pic of all the kids, my sister Stephanie, brother Michael and I, with our dad about to dig in. Hope you all had a happy Father’s Day!

Fave Five Father's Day Treats

Nothing says I love you, dad like a giant slice of cake… or a jelly filled donut, or a chocolate chip cookie the size of your face! Really, any dessert will do. For those who don't know me, I often express my love through baked goods. There’s nothing sweeter then the gift of sugar. That is why today I’m sharing my fave five Father’s Day treat ideas. Some are easy, some are scary difficult (I’m looking at you Bakerella) but all are just right. You see the best part of edible gifts is that you have to wait until the last minute to make them! That’s right last minute gift givers out there; you’ve got plenty of time to whip up some tasty treats for dad. You’re welcome.

2013 on Instagram

Happy New Year everyone! I hope it was filled with lots and lots of bubbly- drink and friends alike. Nick and I returned home from an impromptu getaway late last night, and I’m still processing it all. But I’ll tell you our New Years celebration was wonderfully low-key, spent lounging around our vintage hotel room drinking Champagne and watching fireworks from our windowsill. Stay tuned for a proper reflection on 2013, tomorrow. For now, here’s a look at some of my favorite memories of the year as captured on Instagram.

Vintage Christmas Cards

Aren’t these vintage Christmas cards lovely? I think I’d get along just fine with these ladies in their red dresses with stripes, bows, polka dots, and wonderfully full skirts. Perhaps I was meant to be in a Christmas card, as this describes 90% of my wardrobe. Maybe next year...Check out my Pinterest for sources and more holiday pinsperation.
