We’re back! And what a wild and crazy adventure it was! Together, Nick and I journeyed 2500 miles around the Pacific Northwest, stopping in 7 cities in 10 days. Dunsmuir, Bend, Portland, Yachats, Cave Junction, Napa, Healdsburg. (and that’s not counting the towns we stopped at in between) We drove along volcanos, lakes, rivers and coastline through countryside, forests, mountains, vineyards, fog, snow and fire. We hiked Crater Lake, Smith Rock and Multnomah Falls, biked through Bend and Portland, saw Mt. Shasta, Mt Hood, Tillamook, Heceta Head Lighthouse, Haystack Rock, sneaker waves, and a pack of wild elk.

We drank craft beer from famous breweries and wine from Napa. We ate excellent food from all over and somehow didn’t explode. Not even after Portland’s schnitzelwich. We slept in a red vintage train car, at a railroad resort. We saw the sun set over the ocean and rise over treetops. Every day we took the scenic route, stopping whenever and wherever we wanted. It was the best adventure we’ve taken yet and it had a pretty incredible grand finale... Stay tuned for some big exciting news, coming tomorrow! Happy to be home!

Summer Of Smoke

We’re back! Another river rafting adventure has come and gone- and what a lovely vacation it was! These pictures only capture a fraction of how amazing it is to be on the river. You just sit back in your boat and float, letting the current carry you downstream, not caring what direction you’re facing, keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife. We saw eagles, turtles, ducks, crayfish, deer and a mink! Eventually you hear the water start to pick up and you know a rapid is near. So you strap on your life vest and helmet, secure your camera and get ready.

Going through a rapid is a blur of adrenaline and excitement. This year I tried an individual kayak which was especially challenging. I couldn't rely on anyone to help guide or paddle me through. It was just me and the river. It was the scariest and most rewarding experience. I even went through the biggest rapid (a class 3+) and made it through without spilling! I have photos to prove it. I’ll share those as soon as I get them from Nick’s parents. After a day on the river we’d return to our cabin and read, drink beer, watch a movie and sometimes do nothing. There’s no cell service and no reliable internet so you’re forced to detach. I highly recommend doing this at least once a year. It’s liberating. I hope you all had a wonderful week! I’ve got some great things planned so stay tuned!

It looks like we ventured out in foggy mornings or at twilight. But that dreamy haze that made for such neat photos was actually smoke. While river rafting, we were surrounded by multiple wildfires, sparked by lightning strikes the day before we arrived. The air smelled like campfire and we saw many firefighters and their vehicles. Thankfully they were never too close, but as the smoke grew thicker we were relieved to return home to clean air. Hopefully they are contained soon!

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend. We had a wonderful getaway to San Diego, that was over all too quickly. As always. We drove down Friday afternoon stopping for beer and bites at Lost Abbey and Stone Brewing. Then after a quick costume change at our hotel, we ventured downtown for a taste of Comic-Con. We danced our hearts out at the Nerdist Conival party along with some celebrities we recognized and people in cosplay we did not recognize. I vowed to never wear my cat hat again. It was falling off my head all night. We only took one blurry photo, and it was in our hotel elevator….translated that means we had an awesome night.

Saturday we woke up, pulled ourselves together over a massive brunch, and then spent the day brewery hopping around town. Highlights included a chocolate peanut butter beer float, floppy disk wall, carnitas, and a ceiling covered in lampshades. We dined at the hotel lounge and went to bed early.

Sunday we had an amazing breakfast at Jake’s Del Mar- the cutest oceanfront restaurant with a wall of windows opening towards the beach. The weather was perfect and we watched surfers catch waves as we devoured eggs benedict, cheesy breakfast potatoes and Torte Milanese. Afterwards we hiked down a beautiful cliff, crossing railroad tracks to the beach, and wandered through the clear water barefoot. We drove home sunkissed and happy, hitting zero traffic. Not bad.

Playing the Slots

I’m back! We got home late last night from a wonderful long weekend in Zion National Park. It was sunny and hot as can be, some days reaching 110 degrees! So, we spent the majority of our days exploring shady slot canyons and wading through the Virgin River. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you might remember our canyoneering adventure from two years ago. We had so much fun on that trip and have been wanting to do it again but the weather prevented us. This year the conditions were perfect and we were able to embark on another adventure. We all felt more comfortable the second time around and were able to repel down the steep cliffs with ease and confidence...kind of. That first step off the edge is still pretty terrifying. The most challenging descent was three parts; First you repel down a cliff into a freezing pool of water. Then you swim through it. Then you have to stand up onto the slippery edge, tighten your rope and repel down another cliff. It was pretty exhilarating, and totally exhausting.

Our second full day we hiked The Narrows, something I had never done before and had been wanting to do since I first visited Zion years ago. The Narrows is the most famous hike in the park. It’s a slot canyon filled with rushing water from the Virgin River. You can hike up it for miles and get lost in smaller slot canyons. As you get further away from the entrance you see fewer people and the canyon walls become narrower. It’s pretty awesome. Slot canyons are pretty awesome. In fact, they’re probably my favorite feature of Zion. But they’re dangerous and we don’t get to explore them every time we come. It all depends on the weather and time of year. It was a real treat to get to spend so much time in them this trip. Next time you’re in Zion, I’d highly recommend playing the slots.

New York, New York

New York, New York- Paint the Gown Red

Today I attempt the crazy task of trying to tell you everything about our time in New York City, in one teeny tiny post. As I sit here, I’m not sure where to start. Should I tell you about getting lost in SoHo, the morning commute, sneaking off walking tours, our “charming” walk-up apartment, falling in love with Wicked, that time Nick’s laptop got stolen or the pianist in the park? Do you want to hear about all the subway, ferry, plane ride, car ride, double-decker bus adventures we took? How about all the pizza, dumplings, brisket, cheesecake, pastrami, perogies, bagels and donuts I ate? There’s a lot to tell you guys. But to keep you sane, I think I’ll just skip to the highlights and let you know what I enjoyed most and recommend in the city that never sleeps.

GO: To a play. Go to a bunch of plays. Theater in New York is unlike anywhere else. We were fortunate to attend two shows while in town, Wicked and Book of Mormon. Both were amazing in different ways. The theaters are ornate and beautiful, like so many of the buildings in the city. I found myself obsessed with architecture and enjoyed being able to see such different styles in each neighborhood. I loved to wander through the Public Library and Grand Central Station and think about who had been there before me. There aren’t a lot of old buildings in California and it was awesome to experience such history. The outdoor spaces are also wonderful and I spent most of my time in The Highline, Washington Square Park and Central Park.

EAT: EVERYTHING!!! My favorite part of NYC was the food. We ate so many delicious treats during our stay that we’re now required to go on a 3 week fast to compensate. But it was totally worth it. When you’re on vacation, you don’t calorie count, you don’t worry. You ask yourself one simple question, do I want to eat that? If the answer is yes, then you eat that thing. Maybe even two. No regrets. You can do a lot of damage living in that mindset for three weeks. And we did. Here’s a list of some of our favorite sweets and feasts!

SWEETS
Donuts: Dough & Doughnut Plant
Cheesecake: Junior's
Pie: Petee’s Pie
Cake: MomoFuku Milk Bar
Brunch: Cookshop
Pancakes: Clinton Street Baking Co
Chicken + Waffles: Sweet Chick
FEASTS
BBQ: Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque
Dumplings: Prosperity Dumpling
Deli: Katz Delicatessen
Pizza: Lombardi’s Pizza
Date Night: Gramercy Tavern
Asian Fusion: Pig & Khao
Salads: Sweetgreen

DRINK: craft beer! Nick and I don’t really go out to bars and clubs anymore. Instead, we get our drink on at breweries, brunch and the occasional happy hour. Our favorite spot was Alphabet City Beer Co: part beer store, part tasting room and part grilled cheese shop. ABC was down the street from us and had a chill vibe, served great beer and made the best grilled cheese sandwiches with jalapeno raspberry jam. We’d go for a pint and then leave with our week’s supply of beer. Another place with a similar style is Top Hops Beer Shop. On the weekends we explored breweries somehow making our way to Brooklyn Brewery, Flagship Brewing Company, Rockaway Brewing Company, Big Alice Brewing and Other Half Brewing Co. We got around.

Is that it? Probably not... but it is for now! New York City is a crazy place and I’m glad to have had the opportunity to live there for three weeks. That being said, I’m very happy to be home! I missed my kitties, apartment, friends, family, and you guys! I’m ready to cook up some awesome DIYs and treats. I’m ready for Summer! Let's do this!
