Weekend Getaway to Stowe, Vermont- Paint the Gown Red

Home sweet home! After three weeks away, we’re finally back! Boy did it feel good to sleep in our own bed last night. We did so much during our three weeks in New York. Too much. I don’t even know how I’m going to break it all down for you. So I won’t, today. Instead I’ll start small and share the details of our Memorial Day weekend getaway to Stowe, Vermont. We were only there for two nights and one full day, but had the most amazing time. If you ever find yourself in or around the beautiful town, here are my recommendations.

STAY: At the Green Mountain Inn. This historic hotel built in 1833 is the definition of New England charm. It’s located on a popular, but very quiet, street with breathtaking views of white church steeples, colorful victorian buildings and the beautiful Vermont countryside. We stayed in the brick Mansfield House and our room was incredible. Probably 3 or 4 times the size of our NYC apartment at the same price per night. It was equipped with a super comfortable four poster bed, a fireplace and our very own jacuzzi tub! There was so much room for activities! Especially after living in our NYC closet for two weeks. We spent the evenings at the restaurant bar, drinking Heady Topper and chatting with the friendly bartender and enjoyed a breakfast buffet in the mornings. It was lovely.

EAT: Everything you can! But really. If you’re only in Stowe for a weekend, get ready to eat way more than you’re used to. For snacks go to the Cabot Annex Store and Cold Hollow Cider Mill. At Cabot's be prepared take place in a comical around the world style cheese tasting. You will walk around a long rectangular table poking toothpicks into 30+ different types of cheese, rather uncomfortably close to the person next to you. Warning- don’t try to sample all the cheeses. After, you’ll need something to wash down all that cheddar! So head to the Cold Hollow Cider Mill for apple cider straight from the barrel! Don't forget to eat a cider donut. They’re bomb. When you’re finally able to eat again, pop on over to Harrison's for a delicious dinner in a cozy, dimly lit, friendly, old-school restaurant. Title

DRINK: All of the beer! Here’s the truth- we went to Vermont for beer. Yep. We drove five and a half hours just for beer. But before you judge us you should know, Vermont is known for it’s craft beer scene. In fact, the beer that prompted this trip, Heady Topper, is the highest rated beer in the country! Does that help our case? Maybe? Needless to say we visited a fair share of beer bars, cellars and breweries on this trip. We ever tried some hard cider! Here are all the places I recommend- Craft Beer Cellar, Prohibition Pig, Trapp Lager Brewery, Rimrock Tavern and Boyden Valley Winery. But wait, what about Alchemist? Wouldn’t you like to know that the creators of Heady Topper, don’t actually have a taproom. Yep. We drove all the way to Vermont for a beer that we couldn’t even sample in the brewery. But! Almost all the local restaurants serve Heady Topper in cans, including the Green Mountain Inn. So that we did. And it was good.

GO: outside! One of the best parts of our weekend away was getting out of the city and into the great outdoors. It is so unbelievably green in Vermont. And so quiet. Stowe is basically the complete opposite of New York City. So when you visit, take advantage of nature! If you’re looking for constant excitement and entertainment, turnaround. Stowe is a place to slow down, clear your head and unwind. There aren’t crowds of people rushing by, things close early, cars don’t honk. Take advantage of the pace and the space around you. Walk along the Stowe Recreation Path, hike to Bingham Falls and drive through Smugglers Notch. It was these activities that restored our sanity after weeks of city life. It was wonderful. Just what you need. Guaranteed.
